Friends of Indianapolis Dogs Outside to offer supplies for Indy pets during cold weather
Indianapolis, IN – January 14, 2017 – Friends of Indianapolis Dogs Outside (FIDO) will provide straw for Indianapolis dog owners and community cat caretakers this Sunday, January 15 from noon to 3 p.m. at the FIDO warehouse located at 1505 N. Sherman Dr., 46201. These supplies will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis while they last. Donations are appreciated!
It is now a violation of city ordinance (revised Code of the Consolidated City and County, Indianapolis/Marion County, IN Section 531-401) to leave a dog outside when the temperature is below 20°. Dogs require shelter and insulating bedding whenever they are kept outdoors. Straw is the best type of insulation for a pet shelter. Domesticated pets, especially short-haired breeds, do not have the same protection against the brutal cold as wild and roaming animals.
During the winter, a dog house will keep a dog dry and help maintain body heat. The house should only be large enough for him to turn around inside and not much bigger, and should be half-filled with straw for bedding and insulation. Face the opening to the south and nail heavy plastic or cloth strips over the door to keep the wind outside and body heat inside.
Those who need to report pets in immediate danger need to call the Mayor's Action Line at 317-327-4622. For those who need help with their own dogs, FIDO can be reached via our website at fidoindy.org or by calling 317-221-1314.
Friends of Indianapolis Dogs Outside is an all-volunteer 501(c)3 animal welfare organization that focuses on helping low-income dog owners improve the quality of life for their outside dogs.
Since 2005, FIDO has made significant strides in Indianapolis to reduce the number of chained dogs and has helped hundreds of families provide humane containment for their outside dogs by providing fencing and shelters.
